Speech Sound Development Checklist

Discover if your child is on track for their age.

This isn't therapy. It's connection-based sound practice

made for busy families

Where speech begins with smiles and sounds

They had the spark. They have all the little things we look for in early communication. They were watching my face, taking turns, copying actions…

But the sounds just weren’t coming.

Some families I’ve worked with had been sitting on long waitlists, stuck in that limbo of wanting to help but not knowing where to begin.

Others were curious, wondering if their child’s speech was developing as expected.

Some simply wanted to make their home more language-rich and sound-filled, even if there were no clear concerns.

What they all had in common?

They wanted to support their child’s speech in ways that felt natural, and not clinical. Joyful, not stressful.

I knew we needed something fresh. Something current.

Something that actually speaks to this age group, colourful, playful, and grounded in how little ones really learn.

Not another worksheet.

Not another drill.

Something that invited children to play with sounds , through movement, imagination, and connection.

That’s why I created Little Soundlings.

A colourful, engaging, and evidence-informed tool designed to help children explore new speech sounds through everyday play within the family home, in the garden, or anywhere they feel safe and supported.

It’s grounded in the strategies I use as a speech pathologist like modelling, repetition, and multisensory engagement

, but designed for anyone to use, not just therapists.

Because when the foundation is there...

Perfect for You If
You’re supporting a child aged
2–5 years who:

Isn’t yet saying all the speech sounds expected for their age

Is showing early or emerging preverbal communication skills, such as:

  • Watching your face during interactions

  • Making sounds or gestures to get your attention

  • Reaching, pointing, giving, or showing objects

  • Starting to imitate sounds, actions, or facial expressions

  • Taking part in shared play or moments of joint attention

You’re on a waitlist for speech therapy, in-between sessions, or wanting to do more at home to support your child’s communication journey in a fun, pressure-free way.

You want to create joyful, sound-rich moments at home, using play, movement, and character-based learning — not flashcards or drill.

You’re a parent, career, early childhood educator, or speech pathologist who values connection, imagination, and engagement as the foundation for speech and language development.

You love the idea of turning everyday toys and routines — like cars, blocks, bubbles, or bath time — into meaningful speech practice moments.

Little Soundlings might Not Be for You If…

🚫 You’re looking for a diagnostic tool or a structured therapy

program.

🚫 Little Soundlings is a fun and engaging practice tool that

is not a replacement for individualised speech pathology support.

🚫 Your child isn’t yet showing any signs of emerging preverbal

communication, such as attention to faces, gestures, or sounds.

In this case, it may be more helpful to first focus on building foundational interaction and connection skills before introducing sound-focused activities.

🚫 You prefer rigid, academic-style practice with drills, repetition,

and formal targets.

🚫 This deck is designed to feel like play, not a worksheet perfect

for kids who thrive on imagination, movement, and fun.

🚫 Your child already says all their speech sounds clearly and

consistently.

Frequently Asked Questions

💬What if my child doesn’t talk yet?

That’s completely okay.

Little Soundlings was designed for children who are showing early or emerging communication skills, such as looking at your face, imitating your actions, pointing, or babbling. Even if your child isn’t using words yet, introducing playful sound models during shared play can support their communication development in a natural and engaging way. It's all about building interest, confidence, and connection around sounds.

💬 Do I need to be a speech pathologist to use this?

Not at all!

Little Soundlings was created by a speech pathologist using strategies grounded in research but intentionally made for parents, carers, and educators to use during everyday play. Each card includes an easy-to-understand phrase, image, and movement suggestion. You’ll also get simple tips and guides to help you feel confident modelling sounds in a playful, relaxed way.

💬 What if my child doesn’t like sitting still?

That’s actually ideal!

Young children learn best through movement, play, and exploration. These cards are designed to be used while playing on the floor, with toys, or even running around outside. Instead of requiring sitting and concentrating, they support active learning through combining sounds with gestures, actions, and shared attention.

💬 Is this a replacement for speech therapy?

No. absolutely not!

Little Soundlings is a play-based activity, not a therapy program or diagnostic tool. It’s designed to help children explore and practice speech sounds through fun, movement, and connection. This can be especially helpful while, waiting for services, unable to access support due to location, navigating financial barriers, or simply needing something meaningful to use in the meantime.

While it’s not a substitute for speech therapy, Little Soundlings can help lay the foundation for speech sound development in children who are ready to play, imitate, and explore. If your child is already working with a speech pathologist, we recommend checking in with them first to ensure Little Soundlings complements and doesn’t conflict with your current therapy goals or strategies.

💡 Your speech pathologist may even suggest ways to tailor the cards, model sounds, or build specific prompts based on your child’s individual needs.

💬 How long should I use the cards each day?

Even just 5–10 minutes a day can make a difference, especially when you incorporate the fun and make the play meaningful. You don’t need to set aside “homework time.” Instead, use the cards during your regular play time. Short, consistent, and playful interactions give children the repetition and modelling they need.

💬 What if I don’t know how to pronounce the sound on the card?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Each card includes a natural phrase that models the sound, and you’ll get access to a sound guide and helpful videos after purchase. You’ll be able to listen and repeat without stress, and even if it’s not perfect, your effort still supports your child.

💬 What if my child ignores the card or does something totally different?

That’s completely okay.

Children learn through play, not by following strict instructions. If they’re watching you, playing nearby, or joining in their own way, they’re still getting exposure to the sounds and the interaction. Just follow their lead and model the sound playfully. The goal is to create a positive, low-pressure experience with sounds in your environment.

💬 Is this suitable for older children?

Little Soundlings is best suited for children aged 2–5 years who are still learning and refining their speech sounds. While some older children may still enjoy the characters or benefit from sound play, the content and design are tailored for early learners.

💬 Can I adapt or reuse the cards as my child grows?

Absolutely.

The cards are intentionally flexible. They can be used for movement games, pretend play, storytelling, or even early literacy links. As your child develops, you can shift how you use them — keeping them fresh, fun, and functional at every stage.
